Weekend Getaway Guide: Hanoi, Vietnam

Few cities in Southeast Asia pack as much history, flavour, and raw energy into a single weekend as Hanoi. Vietnam's ancient capital moves at its own rhythm — chaotic on the surface, deeply layered underneath — and even a short visit is enough to leave a lasting impression. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning for another taste of that legendary street food, Hanoi delivers every single time.

Overview

Hanoi sits in northern Vietnam along the banks of the Red River and serves as the country's political and cultural heart. With over 1,000 years of recorded history, it's home to crumbling French colonial architecture, ancient temples, tree-lined boulevards, and one of the most vibrant street food scenes on the planet. Unlike the frenetic pace of Ho Chi Minh City in the south, Hanoi feels simultaneously older and more contemplative — a city where you can wander for hours and still feel like you've barely scratched the surface.

A weekend here works surprisingly well. The Old Quarter is compact and walkable, the food scene rewards spontaneity, and the locals are genuinely warm to curious travellers willing to step off the main tourist drag.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND). $1 USD equals roughly 24,000–25,000 VND. ATMs are widely available, though cash is still king in local markets and street stalls.
  • Language: Vietnamese. Basic English is spoken in most tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants, but learning a few phrases — xin chào (hello) and cảm ơn (thank you) — goes a long way.
  • Time Zone: Indochina Time (ICT), UTC+7. No daylight saving changes.
  • Visa: Many nationalities can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. Always check current entry requirements before travel, as policies can change.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to April offers the most pleasant weather. Summers can be hot and humid, while January and February bring cool, misty days that give the Old Quarter an almost mystical atmosphere.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around the city: Grab (Southeast Asia's answer to Uber) is reliable, affordable, and easy to use. A typical ride across the Old Quarter costs under $2 USD. Avoid metered taxis unless they're from reputable companies like Mai Linh or Vinasun.
  • Street food safety: Eat where the locals eat — look for busy stalls with high turnover. A bowl of pho or bun cha rarely costs more than $1.50–$3 USD from a street vendor.
  • Neighbourhoods to explore: The 36 Streets of the Old Quarter is the obvious starting point, but don't miss the French Quarter for its elegant architecture, or Tay Ho (West Lake) for a more local, neighbourhood feel with excellent cafes and lakeside restaurants.
  • Crossing the street: Traffic in Hanoi does not stop for pedestrians in the traditional sense. Walk slowly and steadily, make eye contact with motorbike riders, and let the traffic flow around you. It sounds terrifying — it works.
  • Bargaining: Expected at markets and with street vendors. Polite negotiation is part of the culture; aggressive haggling is not appreciated.
  • Connectivity: Grab a local SIM card at the airport from Viettel or Vietnamobile for around $5–$8 USD, giving you data for the whole trip.

Getting There

Hanoi is served by Noi Bai International Airport (airport code: HAN), located approximately 45 minutes north of the city centre. It's a well-connected hub with direct flights from major Asian cities including Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur. From Europe or North America, most travellers connect through one of these regional hubs, with total journey times typically ranging from 14 to 22 hours depending on origin.

Airlines like Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, AirAsia, and Singapore Airlines regularly service HAN. Budget-conscious travellers flying within Southeast Asia can often find fares under $80 USD one-way. From the airport, the most efficient option into the city is the express bus (Route 86) for around $2 USD, or a Grab car for approximately $8–$12 USD to central Hanoi.

Accommodation Options

Budget: The Old Quarter is packed with guesthouses and hostels offering clean, comfortable rooms from $15–$35 USD per night. Look around Ma May Street or Hang Bac Street for solid mid-budget options with a great central location.

Mid-Range: Boutique hotels in the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake offer excellent value between $50–$120 USD per night. Properties like La Sinfonía del Rey Hotel or similar boutique stays blend colonial charm with modern amenities and genuinely attentive service.

Luxury: The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is the gold standard — a true icon of the city with a history stretching back to 1901. Expect rates from $250–$400+ USD per night. For a more contemporary luxury experience, the Capella Hanoi in the Old Quarter offers stunning design and impeccable service at a similar price point.
