Complete Travel Guide: Hiroshima, Japan

Few cities in the world carry as much weight โ€” or as much beauty โ€” as Hiroshima. Once defined by tragedy, this resilient city has transformed into one of Japan's most compelling destinations, blending profound history with vibrant food culture, stunning island scenery, and a warmth that stays with you long after you leave.

Overview

Located in the Chugoku region of western Honshu, Hiroshima sits along the delta of the Ota River and faces the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea. With a population of around 1.2 million, it is a thriving modern city that feels genuinely lived-in rather than tourist-polished. Visitors come primarily to reflect at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, but those who linger discover outstanding ramen, oyster dishes, lively izakayas in the Nagarekawa district, and easy day trips to one of Japan's most sacred islands, Miyajima.

  • Language: Japanese (English signage is common in tourist areas)
  • Currency: Japanese Yen (JPY) โ€” budget roughly $80โ€“$150 USD per day
  • Best time to visit: March to May (cherry blossoms) and October to November (mild weather, autumn foliage)
  • Time zone: JST (UTC+9)

Essential Information

Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is the emotional heart of the city and should be your first stop. Entry to the grounds is free, while the Peace Memorial Museum costs approximately $1.50 USD โ€” arguably one of the most important museums you will ever visit. Give yourself at least two hours here. The iconic Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits just outside the park and requires no ticket at all.

For a completely different side of the city, take a 30-minute ferry or tram-and-ferry combination to Miyajima Island. The floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is one of Japan's most photographed sights, particularly at high tide. The island also has friendly free-roaming deer and excellent grilled oysters sold along the shopping arcade near the pier. Budget around $15โ€“$20 USD for the round-trip ferry plus shrine entry.

Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki โ€” a layered savory pancake stacked with noodles, cabbage, pork, and egg โ€” is a non-negotiable culinary experience. Head to Okonomimura, a multi-floor building in central Hiroshima packed with small dedicated stalls, where a generous serving costs around $9โ€“$12 USD.

Practical Tips

  • Purchase a Hiroshima Tourist Pass for unlimited tram and ferry rides โ€” it pays for itself quickly and costs around $8 USD for one day.
  • The city's tram network (streetcar) is easy to navigate and covers most major sights. Taxis are available but pricier.
  • Many restaurants and smaller shops are still cash-preferred, so carry yen.
  • Book the Peace Memorial Museum tickets online in advance during peak seasons to avoid long queues.
  • The Nagarekawa and Shintenchi neighbourhoods are the best areas for nightlife, craft cocktails, and late-night ramen.
  • Respect local etiquette at memorial sites โ€” keep voices low and put phones away where signage asks you to.

Getting There

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is the most direct option for international travellers, located about 50 kilometres east of the city centre. A direct airport bus connects the terminal to central Hiroshima in roughly 45 minutes for around $12 USD. However, most long-haul flights connect through major hubs such as Tokyo Haneda (HND), Tokyo Narita (NRT), or Osaka Kansai (KIX). From Tokyo, the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima takes approximately four hours and is a scenic, comfortable journey well worth experiencing if you hold a Japan Rail Pass. From Osaka, the journey is under two hours by Shinkansen.

Airlines serving HIJ directly from within Asia include ANA, JAL, and several regional carriers. If flying internationally, routing through Tokyo or Osaka gives you the widest choice of connections and often better fares.

Accommodation Options

Budget ($30โ€“$70 USD/night): Hiroshima has excellent hostels and guesthouses clustered near the Peace Park and the main train station. Len Hiroshima and K's House are consistently well-reviewed for cleanliness, social atmosphere, and central locations.

Mid-Range ($80โ€“$180 USD/night): The Vessel Hotel Campana Hiroshima and ANA Crowne Plaza offer reliable comfort, good breakfast options, and proximity to tram stops. The area around Hiroshima Station has numerous business hotels that are clean, modern, and well-connected.

Luxury ($200+ USD/night): For a splurge, consider the Sheraton Grand Hiroshima or opt for a traditional ryokan experience on Miyajima Island itself. Staying overnight on Miyajima after the day-trippers leave is genuinely magical โ€” the shrine lit up at night with almost no crowds is an unforgettable sight.
