Weekend Getaway Guide: Hiroshima, Japan

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Hiroshima is one of those rare places that manages to be both deeply moving and utterly life-affirming at the same time. Whether you have a single weekend or a few extra days to spare, this resilient city in western Japan rewards visitors with world-class history, exceptional food, and a warmth that's hard to find anywhere else on Earth.

Overview

Sitting on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture, the city is best known internationally for the events of August 6, 1945, but today it stands as a powerful symbol of peace, rebuilding, and human resilience. Far from being a place defined solely by tragedy, Hiroshima is a vibrant, forward-looking city with excellent restaurants, a lively nightlife scene, beautiful islands just offshore, and some of the friendliest locals in Japan. A weekend here gives you enough time to absorb the history, explore the surrounding area, and still eat your weight in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.

Essential Information

  • Country: Japan
  • Language: Japanese (English signage is common in tourist areas)
  • Currency: Japanese Yen (JPY). Budget roughly $80–$150 USD per day for accommodation, food, and transport
  • Time Zone: JST (UTC+9)
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring (late March to May) for cherry blossoms, and autumn (October to November) for stunning foliage. Summers are hot and humid, so pack accordingly
  • Visa: Citizens of the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and most EU countries can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days
  • Safety: Hiroshima is extremely safe. Standard travel precautions apply, but petty crime is very low

Practical Tips

  • Get an IC card: Pick up a Suica or ICOCA card at the airport or train station. These rechargeable travel cards work on trams, buses, and even at convenience stores across the city
  • Use the streetcar: Hiroshima has a fantastic tram network that covers most major sights. A one-day tram pass costs around $2.50 USD and is well worth it
  • Cash is still king: While card acceptance is growing, many smaller restaurants and local shops are cash-only. Keep some yen on hand
  • Try the local food: Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is layered rather than mixed, and it's a must-try. Head to Okonomi-mura, a multi-floor building in the city centre packed with small okonomiyaki stalls, for an authentic and affordable meal around $8–$12 USD
  • Explore Nagarekawa: This neighbourhood near the city centre comes alive at night with izakayas, cocktail bars, and live music venues. It's the perfect spot for an evening out after a day of sightseeing
  • Day trip to Miyajima: The island of Miyajima, home to the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, is just 30–40 minutes from the city by train and ferry. Budget around $15–$20 USD for the round trip and shrine entrance fee

Getting There

Hiroshima is served by Hiroshima Airport (HIJ), located about 50 kilometres east of the city centre. International travellers will typically connect through Tokyo Narita (NRT), Tokyo Haneda (HND), or Osaka Kansai (KIX). Airlines including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways operate regular domestic connections, with flights from Tokyo taking around 75 minutes. The airport limousine bus connects HIJ to downtown Hiroshima in roughly 45 minutes and costs around $10 USD.

Alternatively, if you're already in Japan, the Shinkansen is a fantastic option. Hiroshima is a stop on the JR Sanyo Shinkansen line, placing it just 1 hour 30 minutes from Osaka and around 4 hours from Tokyo. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, this journey is fully covered. Arriving by bullet train at Hiroshima Station and stepping into the city is an experience in itself.

Accommodation Options

Hiroshima has a solid range of places to stay, and the area around Hiroshima Station and the Peace Memorial Park tends to be most convenient for weekend visitors.

  • Budget ($30–$70/night): The city has several well-reviewed hostels and guesthouses in the Hondori and Nagarekawa areas. Look for K's House Hiroshima or similar boutique hostels for clean, social spaces with great local tips from staff
  • Mid-range ($90–$180/night): Hotel Granvia Hiroshima, connected directly to Hiroshima Station, offers excellent value with spacious rooms and easy access to the Shinkansen. The Vessel Hotel Campana Hiroshima is another strong choice near the Peace Park
  • Luxury ($200+/night): The Sheraton Grand Hiroshima Hotel, also within Hiroshima Station, delivers upscale amenities and city views. For something more boutique and design-forward, seek out one of the city's newer lifestyle hotels in the Motomachi district
