Safety Tips for Travellers: Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa: Safety Tips and Essential Travel Guide

Johannesburg has a reputation that often scares travellers away before they even look at a map โ€” but those who make the journey discover one of Africa's most electrifying cities, packed with world-class restaurants, vibrant street art, and a cultural energy that's impossible to replicate. Yes, Joburg demands a little street smarts, but with the right preparation, it rewards you with an experience you'll be talking about for years.

Overview

Johannesburg โ€” locally known as Joburg or Jozi โ€” is the largest city in South Africa and the economic heartbeat of the African continent. Home to nearly six million people, it sits on the Highveld plateau at around 5,700 feet above sea level, giving it a surprisingly mild climate compared to coastal cities. Visitors come for the world-renowned Apartheid Museum, the buzzing suburb of Maboneng, the upmarket dining scene in Sandton, and as a gateway to iconic destinations like Kruger National Park and the Drakensberg mountains. It is a city of contrasts โ€” unpolished, ambitious, and completely alive.

Essential Information

  • Currency: South African Rand (ZAR). As of 2025, roughly 18โ€“19 ZAR to 1 USD, so your dollar stretches well here.
  • Language: English is widely spoken alongside Zulu, Sotho, and ten other official languages.
  • Visa: Citizens of the US, UK, EU, and many other countries receive a free 90-day visitor's permit on arrival.
  • Power: South Africa uses Type M plugs (round three-pin). Bring a universal adapter.
  • Health: No vaccinations are required for Joburg itself, though hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. Carry travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
  • Load-shedding: Rolling power outages (called load-shedding) are a reality of South African life. Download the EskomSePush app to track scheduled outages in your area.

Practical Safety Tips

Johannesburg deserves honest conversation about safety. Crime โ€” including opportunistic theft and carjacking โ€” does occur, but the vast majority of visitors travel without incident by following sensible precautions.

  • Avoid walking at night: Even in relatively safe neighbourhoods like Sandton and Rosebank, walking after dark is discouraged. Use a trusted ride-hailing app instead.
  • Use Bolt or Uber: Both apps operate reliably in Joburg and are far safer than hailing a street taxi. A cross-city ride rarely costs more than $5โ€“8 USD.
  • Keep valuables out of sight: Do not use your phone openly on the street. Smash-and-grab theft at traffic lights is real โ€” keep car doors locked and windows up.
  • Stay in well-trafficked neighbourhoods: Sandton, Rosebank, Melville, Greenside, and the Maboneng Precinct are popular with tourists and generally safer. Avoid the Joburg CBD after dark unless on a guided tour.
  • ATM safety: Use ATMs inside shopping centres like Sandton City or Rosebank Mall rather than standalone street machines. Be aware of card-skimming scams.
  • Stay connected: Purchase a local SIM card from Vodacom or MTN at the airport for around $5 USD. Staying connected gives you instant access to maps, ride apps, and emergency services.
  • Trust your instincts: If a situation feels wrong, remove yourself. Locals are generally warm and happy to give directions or advice.

Getting There

Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) is the busiest airport on the African continent and extremely well connected globally. Direct flights operate from New York (JFK) with South African Airways and Delta in roughly 15 hours. From London Heathrow, direct flights with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic take around 11 hours. From other major hubs, connections through Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), or Amsterdam (KLM) are popular and often competitively priced. Expect to pay $700โ€“$1,200 USD return from the US, and $500โ€“$900 USD return from the UK depending on season. January and February are typically the cheapest months to fly.

From the airport to the city, the Gautrain rapid rail system is the safest and most reliable option, connecting OR Tambo to Sandton in around 15 minutes for approximately $4 USD. Taxis and Uber are available outside the arrivals hall.

Accommodation Options

Johannesburg offers excellent accommodation at every budget level, and choosing the right neighbourhood matters as much as choosing the right hotel.

  • Budget ($30โ€“$70/night): The City Lodge chain offers clean, reliable rooms across several Joburg locations. In Maboneng, boutique guesthouses offer character-filled stays for under $60 USD.
  • Mid-range ($80โ€“$180/night): The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! in Melrose and various properties in Rosebank hit the sweet spot of comfort and location. Expect rooftop pools, solid Wi-Fi, and easy access to restaurants.
  • Luxury ($200+/night): The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa in Sandhurst is consistently rated among Africa's finest boutique hotels. Sandton also hosts the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, offering stunning Johannesburg skyline views and impeccable service.
