Krabi, Thailand: Your Complete Guide to Getting Around

Krabi is the kind of place that makes you question why you ever considered anywhere else. With its dramatic limestone karsts, emerald waters, and a laid-back atmosphere that somehow manages to feel both adventurous and deeply relaxing, this corner of southern Thailand has earned its reputation as one of Southeast Asia's most breathtaking destinations. Whether you're island-hopping through the Andaman Sea or exploring hidden jungle trails, knowing how to navigate Krabi will make every moment count.

Overview

Krabi Province sits on Thailand's southwestern coast, roughly 500 miles south of Bangkok. It's the gateway to some of Thailand's most celebrated islands β€” Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, and the famous Railay Beach among them β€” yet the mainland itself deserves far more credit than it typically receives. Krabi Town, the provincial capital, is a charming riverside hub with excellent local food, affordable guesthouses, and ferry connections that put the whole region within easy reach. The best time to visit is between November and April, when the weather is dry, the seas are calm, and the whole place seems to shimmer with possibility.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Thai Baht (THB). Roughly 35 THB equals $1 USD. ATMs are widely available in Krabi Town and Ao Nang.
  • Language: Thai is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
  • Visa: Many nationalities receive a 30-day visa exemption on arrival. Always check current requirements before travel.
  • Electricity: 220V, Type A and B plugs. Bring a universal adapter.
  • Safety: Krabi is generally very safe. Exercise the usual caution with valuables on busy beaches and always wear a helmet on rented motorbikes.
  • Local SIM cards: Available at the airport for around $5–$8 USD for a tourist data package. AIS and DTAC offer reliable coverage across the region.

Practical Tips

Getting around Krabi requires a little planning, but that's half the fun. Ao Nang is the main tourist beach town on the mainland, while Krabi Town is the transport and cultural hub about 15 minutes away by songthaew β€” the red shared pickup trucks that are the backbone of local transport. A songthaew ride between the two costs around $1–$1.50 USD, making it one of the best-value ways to move around.

  • Long-tail boats: The iconic wooden long-tail boats are essential for reaching Railay Beach (only accessible by sea) and nearby islands. Expect to pay around $3–$5 USD per person on a shared boat from Ao Nang pier.
  • Motorbike rental: Available throughout Ao Nang for around $8–$12 USD per day. This is the best way to explore Tiger Cave Temple, the mangroves, and quieter local beaches like Klong Muang.
  • Tuk-tuks and taxis: Useful for short trips but always agree on a price before you get in. A tuk-tuk between Krabi Town and Ao Nang typically runs $4–$6 USD.
  • Ferries: Regular ferry services connect Krabi to Koh Lanta (around $8 USD), Koh Phi Phi (around $10 USD), and Phuket. Book through your accommodation or directly at the pier for the best rates.

Getting There

Krabi International Airport (IATA code: KBV) is well connected and surprisingly easy to navigate for an airport of its size. Direct international flights operate from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and several Chinese cities, while domestic connections from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) airports run multiple times daily with Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, AirAsia, and Nok Air. Flight time from Bangkok is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, and fares can be as low as $30–$50 USD one way if booked in advance.

From the airport, a metered taxi into Ao Nang costs around $10–$12 USD, while shared minibuses run for approximately $5–$7 USD per person. There is no direct bus or rail connection from the airport itself, but Krabi Town's bus terminal connects to Phuket, Hat Yai, and Bangkok for travellers who prefer overland journeys.

Accommodation Options

Krabi caters to every kind of traveller, and the range of accommodation is genuinely impressive.

  • Budget ($15–$40/night): Krabi Town is your best bet for affordable guesthouses and hostels. The riverside area around Chao Fa Road has several well-reviewed options with a great local atmosphere. Try staying here if you want to experience Krabi beyond the tourist bubble.
  • Mid-range ($50–$120/night): Ao Nang offers the widest selection of mid-range hotels and boutique resorts. Properties along the beachfront deliver solid comfort without the luxury price tag, and you'll be within walking distance of restaurants, bars, and the main pier.
  • Luxury ($150+/night): For a truly memorable stay, head to the quieter stretches of coastline around Klong Muang Beach or Tubkaek. Resorts like Phulay Bay and Anantara blend seamlessly into the jungle and limestone landscape, offering infinity pools, world-class dining, and the kind of service that makes it very hard to leave.
