Day Trips: Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang has a way of surprising even the most well-travelled visitors — a sweeping six-kilometre bay framed by green hills, a buzzing waterfront promenade, and a coastal energy that somehow balances beach-town relaxation with genuine Vietnamese culture. Whether you're plotting a quick escape from Ho Chi Minh City or building a longer coastal itinerary, a day trip to Nha Trang delivers more than most travellers expect.

Overview

Nha Trang is the capital of Khánh Hòa Province on Vietnam's south-central coast, sitting roughly halfway between Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. It's one of the country's oldest beach destinations and remains one of its most popular — and for good reason. The city offers a rare combination of accessible island-hopping, well-preserved heritage sites, fresh seafood, and a lively atmosphere that doesn't feel entirely manufactured for tourists.

  • Location: South-central coast, approximately 450 km north of Ho Chi Minh City
  • Best time to visit: February through August, when the weather is dry and the sea is calm
  • Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND); most prices below are quoted in USD for convenience
  • Language: Vietnamese; English is widely spoken in tourist areas
  • Known for: White-sand beaches, coral reefs, Po Nagar Cham Towers, mud baths, and fresh seafood markets

Essential Information

The heart of Nha Trang for visitors is the beachfront strip along Trần Phú Boulevard, lined with hotels, cafés, and restaurants facing the bay. Head a few blocks inland, however, and you'll find a more authentic slice of daily Vietnamese life — local markets, pho shops that open before dawn, and neighbourhoods where the tourist trail fades entirely.

Top experiences worth fitting into a day trip include a visit to the Po Nagar Cham Towers, a stunning 8th-century Hindu temple complex sitting on a hilltop north of the city centre (entry around $1.50 USD). The Long Son Pagoda, with its enormous white Buddha overlooking the city, is free to enter and just a short ride from the beach. For those who want to get on the water, island-hopping tours to nearby Mun Island, Mot Island, or Tam Island can be arranged through local operators for $15–25 USD per person, typically including snorkelling and lunch.

Don't miss the Xom Bong fish market in the early morning — it's chaotic, colourful, and one of the most vivid local experiences the city has to offer.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around locally: Grab and Be are both active in Nha Trang — a ride across the city rarely costs more than $1.50–2.00 USD. Motorbike taxis are plentiful but agree on a price before you hop on.
  • Eating well on a budget: The area around Nguyễn Thiện Thuật Street is packed with local eateries where a full meal costs under $3. Bún bò Huế (spicy beef noodle soup) and bánh mì are both excellent here.
  • Avoid the tourist traps: The beachfront restaurants charge a premium. Walk one or two blocks inland and prices drop significantly with no loss in quality.
  • Sun protection: The coastal sun in Nha Trang is intense year-round. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and plan beach time in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Scams to watch for: Be cautious of unsolicited boat tour operators on the beach — book through your hotel or a reputable agency instead.

Getting There

Nha Trang is served by Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR), located approximately 35 km south of the city centre. Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Bamboo Airways all operate frequent domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City (around 1 hour), Ha Noi (approximately 1 hour 45 minutes), and Da Nang (around 1 hour). International connections are available from several regional hubs including Seoul Incheon, Kuala Lumpur, and Shanghai, with seasonal routes expanding each year.

The airport transfer into the city takes around 45 minutes by taxi or shuttle and costs roughly $8–12 USD. Pre-booked airport transfers are available through most hotels and are highly recommended if you're arriving late or travelling with luggage.
