Getting Around: Nha Trang, Vietnam

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Introduction

Nha Trang is one of Vietnam's most beloved coastal cities, drawing travellers with its turquoise waters, buzzing street food scene, and surprisingly easy accessibility. Whether you're island-hopping, temple-exploring, or simply sipping a cold Bia Hơi on the beachfront, knowing how to get around makes all the difference. Here's everything you need to plan a seamless trip to this sun-soaked gem on the South Central Coast.

Overview

Nestled between dramatic mountains and a sweeping six-kilometre bay, Nha Trang sits in Khánh Hòa Province and serves as Vietnam's unofficial diving and watersports capital. The city balances a lively tourist infrastructure with genuine Vietnamese character — you'll find world-class resorts alongside chaotic local markets and motorbike-lined alleyways. It's popular year-round, though the dry season between January and August offers the most reliable beach weather. With a population of around 400,000, Nha Trang is large enough to keep you busy for a week but compact enough to feel navigable from day one.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Vietnamese Đồng (VND). Most tourist-facing businesses accept USD, but you'll get better value paying in local currency. ATMs are plentiful along Trần Phú Street.
  • Language: Vietnamese is the official language. English is spoken widely in hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies along the beachfront strip.
  • Time Zone: Indochina Time (ICT), UTC+7. No daylight saving adjustments.
  • Connectivity: SIM cards from Viettel or Vinaphone cost around $3–5 USD and offer generous 4G data packages. Pick one up at the airport or any mobile shop in the city centre.
  • Safety: Nha Trang is generally safe, but petty theft on the beach is not uncommon. Keep valuables secure and be cautious with bag straps on motorbikes.

Practical Tips

Getting around the city itself is straightforward. Grab taxis from Vinasun or Mai Linh — both are metered and reliable, with short city rides costing between $1.50 and $4 USD. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are equally convenient and often slightly cheaper, making it easy to estimate fares before you commit. For a more local experience, renting a motorbike costs around $6–10 USD per day from guesthouses or shops near the backpacker hub on Biet Thu Street — just ensure you have a valid international driving permit.

The city's main beach road, Trần Phú, runs the length of the seafront and is where most tourist activity is concentrated. The area around Lộc Thọ Market is worth exploring for street food and local colour, while the quieter residential streets north of the Ana Marina offer a slower pace. Cyclos (three-wheeled bicycle taxis) still operate and can be a charming way to cover short distances, though always agree on a price upfront.

For island day trips to destinations like Hòn Mun or Hòn Tằm, boat tours depart from Cầu Đá Port in the south of the city. Prices range from $10–25 USD depending on whether you book independently at the pier or through a hotel tour desk.

Getting There

Nha Trang is served by Cam Ranh International Airport (IATA: CXR), located approximately 30 kilometres south of the city centre. The airport handles both domestic and international routes. Domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City operate frequently with Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Bamboo Airways, with one-way fares starting from as little as $20–35 USD when booked in advance. Flight time from Ho Chi Minh City is around one hour; from Hanoi, expect roughly one hour and forty minutes.

International connections are limited but growing. Regular services operate from regional hubs including Seoul, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. Most international travellers connect through Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City or Noi Bai in Hanoi before catching an onward domestic flight.

From the airport, taxis to central Nha Trang cost around $10–15 USD and take 40–50 minutes depending on traffic. Airport shuttle buses are a budget-friendly alternative at roughly $3 USD per person, dropping passengers at key points along the beachfront.

Accommodation Options

Nha Trang caters to every budget with a wide range of places to stay.

  • Budget: The Biet Thu Street area is lined with guesthouses and hostels offering clean dorm beds from $6–10 USD or private rooms from $15–25 USD per night. Mojzo Inn and similar backpacker-friendly spots are popular choices.
  • Mid-Range: The beachfront and surrounding streets offer solid three-star hotels with pools for $40–80 USD per night. Look at properties near the central beach for easy access to both the water and the restaurant strip.
  • Luxury: The Anam, Mia Resort, and Vinpearl Resort (accessible by cable car to Hon Tre Island) represent the top end of the market, with nightly rates from $150 USD upwards. These properties offer private beaches, spa facilities, and exceptional service.
