Safety Tips for Travellers: Prague, Czech Republic

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Introduction

Prague is one of Europe's most enchanting cities, drawing millions of visitors each year with its fairy-tale architecture, vibrant nightlife, and rich history. But like any major travel destination, knowing how to navigate it safely and smartly can make the difference between a dream trip and a stressful one. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, these essential safety tips for Prague will help you explore with confidence.

Overview

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, sits at the heart of Central Europe and is home to roughly 1.3 million people. The city is divided into distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character — from the tourist-heavy Old Town (Staré Město) and the romantic Malá Strana (Lesser Town) to the more local, laid-back vibe of Vinohrady and Žižkov. Prague consistently ranks among the safest capital cities in Europe, with a relatively low violent crime rate. That said, petty crime, tourist scams, and overcharging are common concerns that travellers should be aware of before they arrive.

Essential Information

Before you land, brush up on a few key facts that will shape your experience on the ground.

  • Currency: The Czech Republic uses the Czech Koruna (CZK), not the Euro. As of 2024, roughly 23 CZK equals $1 USD. Always carry some cash, as smaller restaurants and local shops often don't accept cards.
  • Language: Czech is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few basic phrases like "Děkuji" (thank you) goes a long way with locals.
  • Emergency Numbers: The general emergency number is 112. Police can be reached at 158 and medical emergency services at 155.
  • Common Scams: Watch out for currency exchange booths advertising "0% commission" — they often hide terrible rates in the fine print. Use ATMs affiliated with major banks instead, and avoid exchanging money on the street entirely.
  • Pickpocketing: The Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, and the metro system are hotspots for pickpockets. Keep bags zipped and worn in front, and avoid keeping your phone in your back pocket.

Practical Tips

Staying safe in Prague is largely about being aware of your surroundings and avoiding a handful of well-documented tourist traps.

  • Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps: Bolt and Uber both operate in Prague and are far more reliable than unlicensed taxis, which have been known to dramatically overcharge tourists. A ride from the airport to the city centre should cost no more than $20–25 USD via app.
  • Be cautious on Wenceslas Square at night: While it's a iconic landmark, Wenceslas Square can attract shady characters after dark, including individuals offering drugs or trying to lure travellers into overpriced clubs.
  • Stick to reputable bars and clubs: Sadly, drink spiking has been reported in some venues. Never leave your drink unattended, and if you're bar-hopping, stay with your group and let someone know your plans.
  • Travel insurance is non-negotiable: Healthcare in the Czech Republic is good, but costs for travellers without insurance can add up quickly. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation and theft.
  • Public transport is your friend: Prague's metro, trams, and buses are safe, affordable, and efficient. A 24-hour pass costs around $5 USD. Always validate your ticket to avoid fines from plain-clothes inspectors.

Getting There

Prague is served by Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG), located about 17 kilometres from the city centre. It's a well-connected hub with direct flights from major cities including London, Amsterdam, Dubai, and New York (via connecting hubs). Airlines such as Czech Airlines, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and Lufthansa regularly service the airport. From the US, expect to connect through a major European hub, with total travel times ranging from 10 to 14 hours. Budget travellers should check fare aggregators like Google Flights or Skyscanner for the best deals, particularly if flying from the US Midwest or East Coast. The airport itself is modern and safe, and the journey into the city via Bus 119 connecting to the metro costs under $2 USD.

Accommodation Options

Prague offers accommodation to suit every budget, and choosing the right neighbourhood matters as much as the price point.

  • Budget ($30–$70/night): Hostels and guesthouses in Žižkov or Holešovice offer great value and a more authentic, local feel. Sir Toby's Hostel in Holešovice is a long-standing favourite among backpackers for its safety and social atmosphere.
  • Mid-range ($80–$150/night): Vinohrady is ideal for mid-range travellers — quiet, beautiful, and close to the metro. Boutique hotels here offer charm without the Old Town premium. Expect clean rooms, breakfast options, and easy access to the rest of the city.
  • Luxury ($200+/night): For a splurge, properties like the Four Seasons Prague or the Augustine Hotel in Malá Strana offer world-class service in breathtaking historic buildings. Staying in or near Old Town puts you steps from the major sights but comes with the noise and foot traffic to match.
