Safety Tips for Travellers: Zurich, Switzerland

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Welcome to Zurich: One of the World's Safest Cities

Zurich consistently tops global rankings for quality of life and safety, making it a dream destination for travellers who want to explore Europe without constantly watching their backs. But even in the safest cities, a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you're here for the pristine lake views, the world-class museums, or the legendary Swiss chocolate, these tips will help you travel smarter and enjoy every moment.

Overview

Switzerland's largest city sits at the northern tip of Lake Zurich, framed by the Alps and buzzing with a rare blend of old-world charm and modern efficiency. Zurich is routinely ranked among the top three safest cities in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit's Safe Cities Index, with exceptionally low rates of violent crime, pickpocketing, and scams compared to other major European destinations. That said, it is also one of the most expensive cities on the planet, so budgeting wisely is just as important as staying safe. With a population of around 440,000, it feels manageable and walkable, yet it punches well above its weight in culture, dining, and nightlife.

Essential Information

Before you land, get these basics locked in:

  • Currency: Swiss Franc (CHF). As of 2024, roughly 1 CHF equals $1.12 USD. Card payments are widely accepted, but carrying some cash for smaller cafΓ©s and market stalls is a smart move.
  • Language: Swiss German is the local dialect, but English is spoken fluently almost everywhere in Zurich, particularly in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Emergency numbers: Police 117, Ambulance 144, Fire 118. The European emergency number 112 also works.
  • Tap water: Perfectly safe to drink and genuinely delicious. Zurich has over 1,200 public drinking fountains β€” use them and save money on bottled water.
  • Healthcare: Medical facilities are world-class, but costs are high. Travel insurance with solid medical coverage is strongly recommended before your trip.
  • Scam awareness: Zurich is remarkably scam-free, but stay alert around the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and the Niederdorf area, where occasional pickpocketing has been reported in crowded bars late at night.

Practical Tips

Staying safe in Zurich is less about avoiding danger and more about being a savvy, respectful traveller. Here's what the locals know that tourists often don't:

  • Buy a ZVV day pass: Zurich's public transport is exceptional. A 24-hour travel card covering zones 110 costs around $9 USD and covers trams, buses, and the S-Bahn across the city. Always validate your ticket β€” inspectors do check, and fines are steep (around $100 USD).
  • Respect quiet hours: Swiss culture values quiet time. Avoid loud noise in residential areas after 10 PM, and don't flush the toilet in some older apartment buildings during night hours β€” it's genuinely a local thing.
  • Watch your valuables at the lake: Lake Zurich's shores and the nearby ZΓΌrichhorn park are beautiful but popular. Don't leave bags unattended when swimming.
  • Night safety: Zurich's nightlife hub is the Langstrasse district in Kreis 4. It's vibrant and generally safe, but it does attract a party crowd. Stick to well-lit streets, don't accept drinks from strangers, and use registered taxis or the Uber app to get home.
  • ATM safety: Use machines attached to banks rather than standalone ATMs, and always shield your PIN.
  • Cycling: Zurich has an excellent bike-sharing scheme. Helmets aren't legally required for adults, but wearing one is wise on busier roads.

Getting There

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is one of Europe's most efficient and well-connected hubs. Direct flights operate from New York (JFK and EWR), Chicago (ORD), Miami (MIA), and Los Angeles (LAX) with Swiss International Air Lines and United Airlines, with flight times ranging from 8 to 11 hours depending on your departure city. Round-trip economy fares typically range from $650 to $1,200 USD, with the best prices found 2–3 months in advance. From the airport, a direct train to Zurich Hauptbahnhof takes just 10 minutes and costs around $4 USD β€” far easier and cheaper than a taxi. The airport itself is extremely safe and organised, but keep bags close in the arrivals hall.

Accommodation Options

Zurich isn't cheap, but there's something for every budget if you know where to look:

  • Budget ($80–$130/night): City Backpacker in the Niederdorf old town area offers clean, well-located dorms and private rooms. The neighbourhood is lively but safe, and walking distance from major sights.
  • Mid-range ($180–$320/night): Hotel Greulich in the trendy Kreis 4/5 area combines modern design with great access to Langstrasse dining and nightlife, without the markup of the lake-facing properties.
  • Luxury ($450+/night): The Baur au Lac is a Zurich institution sitting directly on the lake with views that justify every penny. For something more contemporary, the Park Hyatt Zurich delivers five-star service in the heart of the financial district.
