Weekend Getaway Guide: Zurich, Switzerland

Weekend Getaway Guide: Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich has a way of surprising people. What many assume is just a banking hub turns out to be one of Europe's most liveable, walkable, and genuinely beautiful cities — and it makes for a near-perfect weekend escape. Whether you're flying in from across the Atlantic or hopping over from another European city, two days here is enough to fall completely in love with it.

Overview

Zurich sits at the northern tip of Lake Zurich, framed by rolling hills and — on a clear day — a distant crown of Alpine peaks. It's Switzerland's largest city, but it doesn't feel overwhelming. The old town, known as the Altstadt, spills down both banks of the Limmat River, packed with medieval guild houses, cobbled lanes, and church towers that have been standing for centuries. The city consistently ranks among the world's highest for quality of life, and once you spend a weekend here, you'll understand exactly why.

Beyond the postcard scenery, Zurich has a genuinely creative edge. The Langstrasse district pulses with independent restaurants, bars, and galleries. The West district, known as Zürich West, is a former industrial quarter that now hosts design studios, street food markets, and the famous Freitag bag store built entirely from stacked shipping containers. Culture, food, and outdoor life all coexist here without any of them feeling forced.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Swiss Franc (CHF). Budget roughly 1 USD to 1.12 CHF at current rates, though this fluctuates.
  • Language: Swiss German is the local tongue, but English is widely spoken throughout the city.
  • Best time to visit: Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds than peak summer.
  • Daily budget: Zurich is expensive. Budget travelers should expect to spend around $150–$200 per day including accommodation, food, and transport. Mid-range travelers should plan for $300–$400.
  • Tipping: Not obligatory, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% for good service is appreciated.

Practical Tips

  • Get a ZürichCARD: This city pass covers unlimited use of public transport and free or discounted entry to over 40 museums. A 24-hour card costs around $30 USD and is genuinely worth it.
  • Walk the Altstadt: The old town is compact and best explored on foot. Cross between Niederdorf on the east bank and Lindenhügel on the west for the full picture.
  • Swim in the lake: In summer, locals swim directly in Lake Zurich and the Limmat River from public bathing spots called Badis. The Seebad Utoquai is a favourite. Entry is usually under $10.
  • Eat at the market: Helvetiaplatz market and the Bürkliplatz Saturday market offer local cheeses, meats, and pastries at prices far more reasonable than sit-down restaurants.
  • Avoid taxis: Zurich's trams and trains are punctual, clean, and cover the whole city. A single tram ride costs around $4.50. Taxis are available but significantly more expensive.

Getting There

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is one of Europe's best-connected hubs, sitting just 10 kilometres north of the city centre. From the United States, direct flights operate from New York (JFK and EWR), Chicago (ORD), and Los Angeles (LAX) with Swiss International Air Lines and United Airlines. Flight times from the East Coast average around 8–9 hours. Round-trip fares from New York typically range from $600 to $1,200 depending on season and how far in advance you book.

From within Europe, Zurich is served by virtually every major carrier, with flights from London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Barcelona often available for under $100 round-trip. Once you land, a direct train connects the airport terminal to Zurich Hauptbahnhof (the main railway station) in just 10 minutes, running every few minutes throughout the day. It costs around $4 USD and is by far the easiest way into the city.

Accommodation Options

Budget: The ZORA Hotel and City Backpacker Hostel in the Niederdorf area offer clean, centrally located rooms and dorm beds starting from around $60–$90 per night. They're sociable, well-reviewed, and put you within walking distance of everything.

Mid-Range: Hotel Otter and the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse are both excellent choices in the $180–$280 per night range. The 25hours property sits right in the heart of the creative Langstrasse district and has a rooftop bar that's popular with locals and visitors alike.

Luxury: The Baur au Lac is Zurich's grande dame of luxury hotels, sitting on the edge of the lake with rooms starting around $700 per night. For something with a more contemporary feel, the Park Hyatt Zurich delivers impeccable service and a prime location near Paradeplatz, typically from $450 per night.
