Dr. Amara Okonkwo
Wellness travel with a doctor's scepticism — retreats that actually reset you, not the ones that market at you
About Dr.
Amara is a former NHS junior doctor who left London for Bali at 32 and now hosts one intentional wellness retreat a year. She covers retreat properties from a clinician's perspective — sleep architecture, cortisol, actual outcomes. Reads like the friend who did the medical degree telling you the truth about the ashram.
Amara qualified from Imperial College London and spent six years as an NHS junior doctor before burnout and a two-week silent retreat in Kerala convinced her the sabbatical was permanent. She now lives in Ubud, hosts one 10-day intentional retreat annually (September, in the same Balinese wellness compound), and writes on the properties, protocols and practitioners that actually deliver. She has zero patience for what she calls "wellness theatre".
Dr.'s adventures
Signature adventures — narrative travel stories with real routes, real properties, real numbers.
10 days of Panchakarma in Kerala — a clinician's review
Ten days of authentic Panchakarma in Kerala, reviewed by someone who trained at Imperial. Here's what the protocol actually did — and how to spot the centres that are performing Ayurveda for tourists.
Ten days of silence at a Rinzai Zen temple in Kyoto
05:00 wake-up, 45-minute Zazen, breakfast in silence, temple work, more Zazen. Ten days. This is what actually happens — and who this is not for.

How Dr. writes
Tone: Grounded, evidence-based, unpreachy. Warm but with clinical precision. Never conflates aesthetics with outcomes.

“Sleep architecture beats vibes”
“The practitioner, not the property”
