Kaohsiung is Taiwan's second-largest city + southern gateway to Kenting National Park (2h drive). For 6h layovers: MRT + Lotus Pond + Ruifeng Night Market. For 12+ hours: add Cijin Island + Buddha Museum. Note: Taiwan has excellent English signage + very tourism-friendly. Taiwanese Dollar (NT$) required for MRT (Cash + MRT card only, no international card acceptance at gates yet).
