Miami on a budget
Miami rejects budget travel unless you know which beach is free (all of them), which neighborhoods are hostel-heavy (South Beach), and which food is cheap enough to survive on (Cuban $8 sandwich vs $40 restaurant dinner). Hostels, Cuban lunches and walking keep it cheap.
The real story
Miami is a two-city trip: South Beach (Miami Beach — the postcards) and Downtown/Wynwood/Little Havana (Miami proper — the culture). Public transit is limited outside downtown — Metrorail runs on limited routes but is $2.25 per ride. Miami Beach has no Metrorail; you use Miami-Dade Transit buses ($2.25) or expensive Ubers.
Hostels concentrate in South Beach (Miami Beach International Hostel, Freehand Miami). Downtown hostels are limited but Airbnb is a real option there — a private room in Wynwood or Brickell often beats hostel prices for the neighborhood vibe.
Cuban food is Miami's saving grace for budgets. Sandwich Cubano at Versailles or Puerto Sagua is $8-12. Coffee-with-sugar (cortadito) is $2. Free beaches everywhere — no beach club entry needed unless you're chasing a specific vibe.
