Insider tip
MVD is 20km east of centre — small friendly airport, English signage. Copsa airport bus to Tres Cruces (main bus terminal) is the tourist standard at UYU 150 (~USD 4). Uber works well + often cheaper than official taxis. For 6h layovers: Ciudad Vieja + Mercado del Puerto asado + Rambla walk. Uruguayan pesos required for public bus; USD accepted many places but poor rates — use ATM at airport.

Daylight in Montevideo runs from about 9.7 hours in Jun to 14.3 in Dec. Enough of a difference that a winter stopover gives you noticeably less usable time outside than a summer one.
