Transit visa for Auckland Airport (AKL): do you need one?

By AirConnect Editorial

Auckland is the only New Zealand airport with a transit area. Most transit passengers need either an NZeTA that allows transit or a Transit Visa — very few can connect with neither.

Quick answer

Usually yes. To stay in the Auckland transit area for under 24 hours you need an NZeTA (if your passport is from a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country, or you are travelling to or from Australia) or otherwise a Transit Visa. Only New Zealand citizens and residents, Australian passport holders and a short list of exempt travellers need neither.

The rules at Auckland Airport

Who counts as a transit passenger

You are passing through Auckland International Airport to another country, stay the whole time in the transit area (or on the plane you arrived on), and stay less than 24 hours. You cannot enter New Zealand. At other New Zealand airports there is no transit area. [1]

No visa or NZeTA needed

New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, people travelling on an Australian passport, travellers on Immigration New Zealand’s list of those who do not need an NZeTA, and holders of a valid New Zealand visa. [1]

NZeTA that allows transit

Needed if your passport is from a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country, or — any nationality — if you are flying to Australia holding a current Australian visa, or flying from Australia. [1]

Transit Visa

Needed before you arrive if none of the above applies to you. [1]

Do not collect your bags

Transit passengers cannot collect bags at Auckland. Ask the airline to transfer them, or go to the International Transit Desk on arrival. There is no accommodation in the transit area — to stay in a hotel you need a Visitor Visa. [1]

Do I need a transit visa at Auckland Airport? Answers by passport

Australian passport

No. Travellers on an Australian passport do not need a visa or NZeTA to pass through any New Zealand airport (character requirements still apply). [1]

Chinese (PRC) passport

An NZeTA, not a Transit Visa: since November 2025 Chinese nationals can transit Auckland on an NZeTA. Immigration New Zealand quotes NZD 23 online or NZD 17 in the app, valid for 2 years. [2]

Any passport, flying to or from Australia passport

You need an NZeTA that allows transit (and, if flying to Australia, a current Australian visa) — unless you are on the list of travellers who do not need one. [1]

Other passports passport

If your passport is not from a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country and you are not travelling to or from Australia, you need a Transit Visa before you arrive. [1]
