Boston Logan International (BOS) has one of North America's best airport transit setups: the Silver Line SL1 bus rapid transit runs FREE from all four terminals directly to South Station via the Ted Williams Tunnel, taking 20-25 minutes. From South Station you can transfer FREE to the Red Line subway (Cambridge, Harvard, MIT), commuter rail (Providence, Worcester, Portland), or Amtrak. The Blue Line subway is an alternative for those staying near Aquarium, Government Center, or Downtown Crossing: take the free Massport shuttle bus 22, 33, or 55 to Airport Station, then Blue Line at $2.40 (or $2.90 with cash CharlieTicket). Silver Line SL1 is the default recommendation for most travellers because it's free and one-seat to South Station where every Boston transit line meets. For late-night arrivals, note that Silver Line runs until 01:00 (weekdays) and the Blue Line until 00:45. For truly overnight arrivals, Uber/Lyft or the official taxi ($35-50 flat to downtown) are the fallback. Boston Logan is one of very few US airports where the free option is genuinely the best option.

FAQ

Is the Silver Line SL1 really free from Boston Logan?+

Yes — 100% free outbound from all Logan terminals to South Station. This has been the case since 2005. No CharlieCard needed; you just board. On the return trip (South Station → Logan), the standard $2.40 fare applies. This makes SL1 the best-value airport rail equivalent in the entire United States.

Silver Line or Blue Line from Boston Logan?+

Silver Line SL1 is faster + free for most downtown Boston destinations because it goes direct to South Station (~22 min). Blue Line requires a free Massport shuttle bus (22, 33, or 55) from your terminal to Airport Station first (10 min), then Blue Line (12 min). Blue Line total = ~30-35 min for $2.40. Take Silver Line unless your destination is specifically on the Blue Line corridor.

Late-night Boston Logan airport transit?+

Silver Line SL1 runs Mon-Fri 05:30-01:00, Sat 05:40-01:00, Sun 06:00-00:30. Blue Line runs to about 00:45. Overnight arrivals need Uber/Lyft ($30-70 depending on surge) or the taxi rank ($35-50 flat + tolls). Note that BOS is 24-hour operational; the T shutting at 01:00 is the main constraint.

Can I get to Cambridge / Harvard from Boston Logan by transit?+
