Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft (eVTOLs) — "air taxis" — are the most significant new transport mode since the helicopter. As of 2026, EHang is the only operator with commercial passenger certification, running tourist flights across China (Guangzhou, Hainan, Shenzhen). Joby Aviation launches in Dubai 2026 under a 6-year exclusive with the RTA, with NYC + LA to follow. Archer Aviation has the largest network of announced corridors — Dubai, Newark, LA, Miami, SFO, India (200 aircraft via IndiGo), and Seoul.

FAQ

What is an eVTOL and how is it different from a helicopter?+

eVTOL stands for "electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing" — electric multirotor aircraft that lift off like a helicopter but cruise like a small plane. Key differences from helicopters: (1) Electric, so 50–80% quieter and zero local emissions. (2) Cheaper per seat-mile (~30–60% less than helicopter, scaling further). (3) Some are autonomous (EHang) — no pilot required. (4) Designed for short urban hops, not long-distance. Range is typically 50–250 km on a single charge.

Can I book an eVTOL flight today (May 2026)?+

Only in China. EHang has the world's first Type Certificate for commercial passenger eVTOL operations (CAAC, 2023) and operates tourist sightseeing flights in Guangzhou Bio Island, Hainan (Wuzhizhou Island), Shenzhen Bay, and Hefei. Fares are CNY 200–1,000 (~$28–140 per person). Joby and Archer are still in FAA certification and expect commercial launches in 2026 (Dubai first, then US). Volocopter has had limited demonstration flights but no scheduled service.

What is the Dubai eVTOL launch timeline?+

Dubai is positioning itself as the world's first major eVTOL hub. Joby Aviation has a 6-year exclusive agreement with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to operate aerial taxi from 2026 with 4 vertiports (DXB Airport, Downtown Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina). Archer has a parallel deal with Falcon Aviation Services. Expected travel times: DXB → Downtown in 12 minutes (vs 45+ min by car), Marina → Burj Khalifa in 8 minutes. Pricing not yet announced but expected to launch around $100–200 per seat for short hops.

How does Joby JFK to Manhattan work?+

Joby and Delta announced a partnership to fly passengers between New York airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark) and Manhattan heliports. The JFK → Manhattan hop takes ~7 minutes versus 60+ minutes by taxi at peak. Vertiports include the Downtown Manhattan Heliport (DMH at Pier 6, Battery) and the West 30th Street Heliport. Delta will integrate it into the Delta app for premium-cabin customers initially, with broader access expected in 2026–27. Price expected $100–200 per seat one-way.

Which company has the most planned routes?+

Archer Aviation, by a wide margin. Their announced launch corridors span: Dubai + Abu Dhabi (Falcon partnership), New York (United/Newark), Los Angeles (multiple), Miami + South Florida, San Francisco Bay Area, India (200-aircraft order with IndiGo for Delhi/Mumbai/Bengaluru), South Korea (Kakao), and Ethiopia (Ethiopian Airlines). EHang has more operational routes (China-only) but fewer announced international corridors. Joby is focused on a small number of high-yield corridors (NYC, LA, Dubai, Tokyo).

Are eVTOLs safe?+

In theory, safer than helicopters. eVTOLs use multiple redundant rotors (EHang: 16 rotors, Joby: 6, Archer: 12) — if one or two fail, the aircraft can continue flying. Helicopters depend on a single main rotor. Battery and electric motor reliability are also typically higher than turbines. Certification standards (CAAC, FAA, EASA) demand >99.99999% flight-critical reliability. As of 2026 there have been no commercial passenger fatalities in the EHang fleet (hundreds of revenue flights since 2024). Joby and Archer's eventual FAA Part 135 certification requires equivalent or better safety than commuter airlines.
