FAQ

Why is Fukuoka Airport so close to the city?+

Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is genuinely 3 km from Hakata Station — the closest major airport to its city centre in Japan, and possibly the world. The single-track Subway Kūkō Line runs the 5-minute journey for ¥260. This proximity comes with a tradeoff: a 22:00 nightly curfew on flights (no takeoffs/landings 22:00–07:00) to limit noise on residential neighbourhoods. If your flight is delayed past 22:00, expect to be diverted to Kitakyushu (75 min by bus) or Saga.

Where is the Subway station inside Fukuoka Airport?+

The Subway station is in the Domestic Terminal (国内線), basement level B1. International arrivals (T3) require a free shuttle bus to the Domestic Terminal (5 min ride) — follow signs from immigration. Once at the Domestic Terminal, descend to B1 and follow orange "Subway / Kūkō Line" signs. Total transit time from gate to subway platform is typically 10–15 minutes including the shuttle. Trains run 05:45 to 00:25 daily, every 5–10 minutes.

How do I get from FUK to Nagasaki or Kumamoto?+

Take the Subway (5 min, ¥260) to Hakata Station, then transfer to JR Kyushu Shinkansen or limited express. To Nagasaki: Kamome shinkansen + Relay Kamome express (~90 min, ¥6,050). To Kumamoto: Sakura/Tsubame shinkansen (~35 min, ¥5,130). To Kagoshima: Sakura/Mizuho shinkansen (~80 min, ¥10,640). All journeys covered by JR Pass and the JR Kyushu Rail Pass (¥17,000 for 3 days — great value if doing all three cities).

Can I take the shinkansen from FUK?+

No — the shinkansen (bullet train) departs from Hakata Station, not the airport. But the 5-minute subway ride from FUK to Hakata makes it the fastest airport-to-shinkansen connection in Japan. From Hakata you can reach Tokyo in 5 hours via Nozomi/Hikari shinkansen (¥23,810). The Tokyo–Hakata route is the world's busiest shinkansen line. Many travellers domestic-fly between Tokyo and Fukuoka but take the train back for the views.

How do I get to Tenjin from FUK?+

Same Subway Kūkō Line, 11 minutes for ¥260. Tenjin is central Fukuoka — shopping, business hotels, Nishitetsu private railway hub. The Tenjin underground extension means you can walk underground from the subway exit to most major hotels and the Daimaru, Iwataya, and Mina Tenjin shopping centres. Tenjin and Hakata are 2 km apart; you can also walk between them via the Naka River + Canal City Hakata mall in 30 min.

Is the FUK Subway accessible 24 hours?+

No. First train from FUK is 05:45, last train is 00:25 (around midnight). Outside these hours, taxi (¥1,200–2,000 to Hakata, 10–15 min) is the only option. Fukuoka Airport itself has a strict 22:00 curfew on flights, so most flights arrive 06:00–22:00 — within subway operating hours. For very early departures (e.g. 06:30 to Tokyo), taxi from city is the practical option.
