Velana International (MLE) is the Maldives gateway — located on Hulhulé, the airport island — connected to Malé (the capital) and Hulhumalé (satellite city) via bridges + ferries. Resort transfers are the largest category: seaplane ($200-450 per person one-way, only operates daylight hours), speedboat ($150-500 per person depending on distance, most resorts within 90 min), or domestic flight to closer resort atolls + speedboat. For non-resort travellers: MTCC public ferry to Male (MVR 15 / ~$1, 15 min), speedboat to Male ($15-30, 10 min), or Hulhumalé bus (MVR 20 / ~$1.30). Uber does NOT operate in the Maldives.

FAQ

How do I get from MLE to my Maldives resort?+

Resort transfer is pre-arranged when you book — the resort tells you if it's speedboat (~$150-500 per person round-trip, up to 90 min away) or seaplane (~$200-450 per person, daylight only). At MLE, you'll be met at arrivals by a resort representative holding a sign with your name; they escort you to the correct transfer. This is NOT optional — resorts don't accept independent arrivals.

Can I stay in Male instead of a resort?+

Yes. Male (the capital) has 3-4 star hotels + guesthouses at much cheaper rates ($40-200/night vs $500-5,000 at resorts). Ferry from MLE ($1) or speedboat ($15-30). Hulhumalé is another option — cheaper, more laid-back, easy public bus. Note: Male + Hulhumalé are Muslim-conservative (no alcohol, modest dress in public); resorts are secular by policy.

Seaplane vs speedboat to resort?+

Seaplane if your resort is 60+ min speedboat away (typically ~$400 return per person, scenic + fast). Speedboat if <60 min from Male (typically ~$200-300 return per person, more reliable in poor weather). Seaplanes operate daylight only (06:00-16:30 approx); late arrivals often mean overnight stay in Male then morning seaplane transfer. Confirm timing when booking.

MLE to Male by ferry — safety + luggage?+

MTCC public ferry is very safe + reliable. Boats depart every 15-20 minutes from the ferry terminal at the airport (5 min walk from arrivals). Luggage stows on the outer deck. Payment: cash MVR only (no card). Bring small notes. 20-minute crossing is calm — the harbour is protected. Wet-season monsoons (May-Nov) can add rougher waters but ferry rarely cancels.
