Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport (MUC) connects to central Munich via two S-Bahn (commuter rail) lines: S1 (about 40 min via the western route through Moosach) and S8 (40 min via the eastern route through Ostbahnhof + Marienplatz). Each line runs every 20 minutes and they alternate, so there is a train every 10 minutes; the S8 runs through the night (every 40 minutes from about 1 to 4 a.m.). S8 is the more popular choice for tourists — runs via Ostbahnhof, Marienplatz (central Munich), and Karlsplatz directly to Hauptbahnhof. S1 takes the western route via Moosach. Both reach Hauptbahnhof in 40 min. If your hotel is near Marienplatz or Karlsplatz, S8 saves you a transfer.
Is the airport-city day ticket worth it?+
For round-trip airport access + unlimited city travel same day: yes. The MVV Airport-City-Day-Ticket costs €17.50 (or €32.60 for a group of 2–5) and covers the airport and the whole city area (zones M–5) on all MVV transport until 6 a.m. the next day. A single to or from the airport is €15.10, so the day ticket pays off as soon as you take one more ride, and a group ticket is the best deal for two or more (MVV prices from 1 January 2026).
How early should I leave for the airport from central Munich?+
For S-Bahn during peak hours (07:00-09:00, 16:00-19:00): allow 70-90 minutes from Marienplatz hotel to airport (40 min S-Bahn + 5-10 min walk to platform + buffer for trains running 5-15 min late). Off-peak: 60 minutes is sufficient. The Lufthansa Express Bus is more weather/traffic-dependent but generally a similar 60-75 minute door-to-airport journey.
