Old REP airport

Siem Reap-Angkor International (SAI) opened in October 2023, replacing the old REP airport. Critical detail: the new airport is 40 km east of Siem Reap town (versus 6 km for the old REP), so transport is more expensive and takes 45-60 minutes. There is no public bus service from SAI to Siem Reap as of 2026 — the primary options are: free hotel shuttle (most 3+ star hotels offer this — book at reservation), PassApp car ($18-25, 45 minutes), airport taxi ($25-30 fixed rate at the counter), or pre-booked private transfer ($30-45). Because the new airport is much further out, the "walk 5 minutes to your guesthouse" backpacker option no longer exists — you must arrange transport. For Angkor Wat access: your hotel driver + tuk-tuk options are much cheaper once you're in town; don't hire the airport transfer for temple runs. The airport itself is modern with international brand shops + a currency exchange (rates poor — use ATM or exchange in town).

FAQ

How far is the new Siem Reap airport from town?+

40 km east of Siem Reap central, about 45-60 minutes by car. This is much further than the old REP airport (6 km, 15 min). The transfer is unavoidable and costs $18-30 depending on operator. Free hotel shuttle is the winning play if your hotel offers it — most 3+ star hotels do, but you must confirm at booking time. Budget guesthouses generally don't offer shuttles; use PassApp for those.

PassApp vs airport taxi at SAI?+

Airport taxi has a fixed-rate counter inside arrivals ($25-30 to town) — safest first-choice option. PassApp is $18-25 and requires the app (register before you land — Cambodian phone number preferred but tourist email registration works). Both are safe. The taxi counter is bilingual (English) and pays USD or KHR. For solo travellers with no local SIM, take the taxi. For multi-person groups, PassApp saves $5-10.

Is there a hotel shuttle at Siem Reap airport?+

Most 3+ star and boutique hotels in Siem Reap offer a free or low-cost shuttle if you request at booking. Book AT LEAST 24 hours in advance and provide your flight number — the driver holds a sign with the hotel name at arrivals. Budget guesthouses ($10-20/night) rarely offer this; use PassApp instead. When arriving late (post-22:00), always confirm the shuttle is confirmed — 40km is a lot for no-show risk.

Can I take a tuk-tuk from Siem Reap airport?+

Technically yes via PassApp tuk-tuk ($15-20), but the 40 km ride is 60-90 minutes on the highway — hot, dusty, tiring after a flight. Not recommended for main airport transfer. Save tuk-tuks for temple runs from town ($15-25/day for a full Angkor circuit — the tuk-tuk driver becomes your day guide). For the airport → town leg, take a car.
