Sardinia when the tourists leave — where I actually stayed
The last ferry leaves Olbia at 22:00 in October and the island exhales. This is where I actually stayed — and the chef who kept the kitchen open past midnight because I was writing at his bar.
The story
A six-day off-season route through Sardinia, from the pastel Cagliari old town to the Catalan Alghero and the flamingo lagoons of Cabras. Elena stays in family-run pensioni (all with named front desks she can wave to at 23:00), eats one meal a day standing up at market bars, and settles into a coastal bar in San Vito where the chef-owner, Giulio, quietly brings her a plate of raw prawns and asks nothing about her book. The point isn't Giulio — it's that Sardinia in October is where solo women get remembered, not hassled.
