The Kenyan coast where I wrote a book — and slept with the door open

Three weeks on the Kenyan coast where I finished a manuscript, learned to free-dive, and slept with the door open every night. Here's the neighbourhood.

The story

Elena spent 21 days at a Watamu beach house owned by an older Italian couple who've been coming for 30 years. She writes about the daily rhythm — 05:30 walk before the heat, morning at a co-working overlooking Turtle Bay, afternoon free-diving with a Watamu-born instructor named Ali who took her out three times before letting her go deep, evenings at the same fish restaurant. She names the neighbourhood, the drivers she trusted, and exactly what a solo woman does when the electricity goes out (she puts on a linen dress and walks to the beach bar — this is the point).
