Transit visa for Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB): do you need one?
South Africa dropped the transit visa at its main international airports in 2015. Two nationalities have needed one again since 2022, and every transit passenger has their biometrics captured.

Most travellers do not need a transit visa to connect at OR Tambo (or Cape Town, King Shaka or Lanseria). The exceptions: Pakistani and Bangladeshi passport holders need a transit visa, and deportees always do. To leave the airport you need to qualify for visa-free entry to South Africa or hold a visa.

No transit visa at four airports
Travellers transiting OR Tambo International, Cape Town International, King Shaka and Lanseria do not require transit visas (in force since 18 December 2015), but are subject to biometric capturing. [1]

A transit visa is required for Pakistani and Bangladesh passport holders (Immigration Directive No. 11 of 2022). [1]

UK, US or EU passport
