Transit visa for Sydney Airport (SYD): do you need one?
Australia lets passport holders from a set list connect without a visa for up to 8 hours, as long as they never pass through immigration. Everyone else, and anyone who has to clear immigration, needs a visa such as the Transit visa (subclass 771).
Quick answer
You can transit Sydney without a visa only if your passport is on the Transit Without Visa (TWOV) list, your onward flight leaves within 8 hours, and you do not need to clear immigration or leave the transit lounge. Otherwise you need an Australian visa, for example the Transit visa (subclass 771), which allows up to 72 hours.
