Editor's field notes
AirConnect EditorialWhere the S-Bahn platform is. Long-distance (ICE) and regional (S-Bahn) trains use DIFFERENT stations. The one you want for Frankfurt Hbf is "Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof" — signs point down from the arrivals hall. If you follow "Fernbahnhof" signs you'll end up at the ICE station 500m north, which won't have local S-Bahn trains.
Ticket buying is the annoying bit. RMV machines are on the platform + take contactless. But if you buy at the DB app you MUST specify "Frankfurt am Main" not just "Frankfurt" (there are dozens of Frankfurts in Germany). Wrong destination = wrong price + potential €60 fine. A single ticket is one journey within 60 min of purchase — buy right before you board, not on arrival.
Skip taxi at rush hour. Frankfurt A3 traffic 07:00-09:30 + 16:00-19:00 makes taxi slower than the train — 45-60 min vs 11-15 min. If you land in rush hour, S-Bahn every time.
Connecting elsewhere in Germany? Don't leave the airport. FRA has direct ICE trains to Cologne (55 min), Munich (3h), Basel (2h30), Amsterdam (4h), Paris (4h). Rail Guest Ticket / Fly&Rail on your flight ticket often covers this. Check when booking your flight.
