Tan Son Nhat International — Bus 49 + Bus 109 + Bus 152
Tan Son Nhat (SGN) to Ho Chi Minh City — Updated 2026
Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International (SGN) is one of the most centrally-located major airports in Southeast Asia — only 7 km from District 1. Three public buses serve the airport: Bus 49 direct to backpacker Pham Ngu Lao (VND 20,000, ~$0.80, 45 minutes); Bus 109 to Ben Thanh + District 1 (VND 20,000, 45-60 min, air-conditioned); and Bus 152 the cheap route to Ben Thanh via Nguyen Van Cu (VND 6,000, 60-75 min, no A/C). Buy tickets from the on-board conductor with Vietnamese dong cash (no change for large bills). Buses run 05:30 to 21:30 roughly, but frequency drops after 19:00. For arrivals after 22:00 or with heavy luggage: Grab is VND 100-200,000 (~$4-8) to District 1 — a fraction of any Western taxi cost. The airport also has a growing metro connection planned for 2027 via Line 5 — not yet operational as of 2026.

FAQ
How do I get from Tan Son Nhat airport to Pham Ngu Lao?+
Bus 49 goes directly — VND 20,000 (~$0.80), 45 minutes, runs every 30 min from 05:30 to 21:30. Boarding is just outside the arrivals hall (both domestic + international terminals). Pay the conductor on board with Vietnamese dong cash; no change for VND 500k notes. The bus stops right at 23/9 Park in the heart of backpacker Pham Ngu Lao — walking distance to De Tham + Bui Vien street hostels.
Bus vs Grab from HCMC airport?+
Take the bus if: you have a backpack only, it's daytime, and you're going to Pham Ngu Lao (Bus 49) or Ben Thanh (Bus 109). Take Grab if: you have 2+ suitcases, arriving after 22:00, or heading to a hotel outside central HCMC. Grab car to District 1 is VND 100-200k (~$4-8) — still absurdly cheap by Western standards, and much faster (20-40 min vs 45-60 min).
Is Bus 152 worth taking to save VND 14k?+
Only if you're on the absolute tightest budget or want the local experience. Bus 152 is VND 6,000 vs VND 20,000 for Bus 109 — a real saving of about 60 US cents, but the bus is not air-conditioned, has more stops, and takes 60-75 min. HCMC daytime heat + humidity makes the trade-off worth it only if you're truly maximising budget. For most travellers Bus 109 (VND 20k, A/C) is worth the extra $0.60.
What time do HCMC airport buses stop running?+
All three routes run roughly 05:30 to 21:30 in both directions, with a night gap until 05:30 the next morning. Frequency drops after 19:00 (every 45-60 min instead of every 30). For flights arriving 22:00-05:30, you're on Grab or airport taxi only. Grab is the safer default — no negotiation, no meter shenanigans, VND 100-200k to District 1.
