Ho Chi Minh City's Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien) launched in December 2024 — Vietnam's first urban rail. From Tan Son Nhat International (SGN), you can't currently board Metro Line 1 directly (the line stops at Ben Thanh Market on the west + Suoi Tien on the east; SGN airport connection is via Line 2, which is under construction to be complete by 2028). Instead, take Bus 49 (VND 20,000) or Grab (VND 100-200k) to Ben Thanh Station, then Metro Line 1 to any downtown or eastern destination. Line 1 fare: VND 7,000-20,000 depending on distance. This guide covers using the airport in combination with Metro Line 1 — invaluable for getting from central hotels to Thu Duc + Suoi Tien Cultural Park + Universities.

FAQ

Can I take Metro Line 1 directly from Tan Son Nhat airport?+

Not yet. Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh — Suoi Tien) opened December 2024 but does NOT connect to SGN airport. Line 2 (which will serve the airport) is under construction with a target completion 2028+. To use Metro Line 1 from SGN today: Bus 49 or Grab to Ben Thanh Station, then Metro Line 1 to your destination.

HCMC Metro Line 1 fare + how to pay?+

Fare: VND 7,000-20,000 depending on distance (7,000 for 5km trips, 20,000 for full 20km line). Payment: MRT card (buy at station kiosk, VND 100,000 minimum load — refundable), single-trip ticket (buy at machine, cash or card), or contactless credit card / mobile wallet (rolling out through 2026). Trains run every 8-15 min from 05:00 to 22:30.

What is Metro Line 1 useful for tourists?+

Line 1 is most useful for reaching eastern HCMC (Thu Duc City, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City area, Suoi Tien Cultural Park amusement park) — impractical journeys before by taxi due to traffic. Also useful for the Landmark 81 + Thao Dien expat district (Van Thanh + Tan Cang stations). Less useful for classic Districts 1 and 3 tourist sites (walking distance from Ben Thanh anyway).

When will Metro Line 2 (airport line) open?+

HCMC Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh — Tham Luong) construction is targeted for phased completion 2028+. Line 2 will connect Tan Son Nhat airport (SGN) directly to the metro network. Until then: Bus 49 or Grab are the airport transfer options. Check the current MAUR HCMC status for updated timelines.
