Where to Find the Taxi
Follow yellow "Taxi" signs to the official taxi rank outside Arrivals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 3). Only board white taxis — these are the licensed Rome taxis. Any other colour is unauthorised. Do not accept offers from anyone inside the terminal — this is a common scam.
Uber in Rome
Uber operates in Rome but only as Uber Black (licensed private hire, not UberX). Prices are typically €60–90+ from FCO — more expensive than the official taxi flat rate. For airport runs, the licensed white taxi at €48 is almost always cheaper.
Common Scams to Avoid
- Drivers approaching you inside the terminal — always walk to the official taxi rank outside
- Drivers who say the meter is broken and quote a price upfront — only accept €48 flat rate to centre
- Unmarked or non-white taxis — always check the Rome Capitale licence plate on the door
- Being taken a long route — insist on the A91/GRA motorway route
FAQ
Is the €48 fare really fixed?▼
Yes — it is set by Rome City Council law. The fare covers all passengers, all luggage, and all motorway tolls. You only pay extra for night (22:00–06:00) or Sunday surcharges.
What if the taxi metre starts?▼
If the driver turns on the meter for a journey to the historic centre, remind them the fixed fare is €48. You are legally entitled to pay only €48.
Is the Leonardo Express better value?▼
If travelling alone, the Leonardo Express (€14, 32 min to Termini) is excellent value. For 2–3+ passengers, the €48 taxi splits cheaply and saves luggage handling.
Can I book a taxi in advance?▼
Yes — apps like itTaxi and Rome cabs (radio taxi) let you pre-book. The same €48 fixed fare applies. Pre-booking adds peace of mind at busy times.

Roma Capitale fixed rates — verified
Source: Comune di Roma OR.4/2019 + ADR postingRome's comune-set flat rates apply only inside the Aurelian Walls (Vatican, Trastevere, Termini, Colosseo, Prati). White taxis with the "Roma Capitale" door shield are the ONLY cabs entitled to charge these rates. Fares include up to 4 bags — no legitimate luggage surcharge.
| Route | Flat rate (EUR) | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| FCO ↔ inside Aurelian Walls | €55 | 45-60 min |
| CIA (Ciampino) ↔ Aurelian Walls | €40 | 30-40 min |
| FCO ↔ CIA airport transfer | €60 | 45-55 min |
| FCO ↔ Cruise port (Civitavecchia) | Meter (€110-150) | 45-60 min |
Aurelian Walls = the historic city centre. If your hotel is in Monteverde, EUR quarter, or beyond Piazzale Clodio the meter kicks in — expect €65-90. Always confirm your address is inside the walls BEFORE agreeing to the flat rate.
Editor's field notes
AirConnect EditorialHow to spot a real Rome taxi. White car. Roma Capitale shield on the front doors. Illuminated TAXI sign on the roof. Meter visible from the back seat. Anything else — black cars, tinted windows, sedan-style — is unlicensed. Fine for driving unlicensed hire is €5,000 for the driver, so real operators never offer flat rates outside the rank.
Where the touts wait. Inside T3 arrivals near baggage carousel 6-9. They approach in Italian first, then English if you don't respond. They'll quote €80-100 "special rate". Ignore, walk to the taxi rank outside T3, wait 1-2 minutes for a real cab. The rank is enforced by airport staff during peak hours.
When Uber Black beats the taxi. Uber X is not licensed in Rome — only Uber Black (NCC/Noleggio Con Conducente drivers) operates, priced €65-95 to central Rome. Slightly more than the €55 flat taxi but you get: pre-booked pickup at arrivals, English-speaking driver, in-app receipt, zero cash. Worth it for late-night arrivals or if you want a fixed English-speaking pickup.
Cheaper options if you don't need door-to-door. Leonardo Express train from FCO station to Roma Termini: €14, 32 min direct, every 15 min. Terravision/SIT bus: €6-9, 55 min, stops at Termini. If you can wheel your bag two blocks from Termini, the train saves €40+ over the taxi.
