Which terminal does my airline use at Rome Fiumicino?+
Terminal 1: ITA Airways Schengen + EU short-haul (KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Aegean, TAP, Iberia). Terminal 3: International long-haul + ALL foreign flag carriers — BA, American, Delta, United, Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Turkish, EgyptAir, Saudia, Singapore Airlines, Cathay, ANA, JAL, Korean Air, LATAM, Aerolíneas Argentinas, Ethiopian. Terminal 5: El Al + some US flights — check-in only, then transit to T3 boarding. Terminal 2 has been closed since 2022.
How do I get from Rome Fiumicino to the city?+
Leonardo Express — €14, 32 min non-stop direct to Roma Termini. Best option. Every 15 min, 06:08-23:23. The FL1 regional train is €8 to Trastevere / Ostiense / Tiburtina (30-50 min, slightly cheaper). Taxi €50 FLAT rate to anywhere inside the Aurelian Wall — government-regulated, use ONLY the official white Roma Capitale taxi rank. Avoid the touts shouting "taxi!" inside the terminal.
Should I fly into Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA)?+
FCO for full-service airlines (ITA Airways, BA, Lufthansa, AF, KLM, Emirates, etc.). Ciampino for low-cost (Ryanair, Wizz Air, some easyJet). The two airports are 30 km apart — FCO is southwest of Rome, CIA is southeast. Both have direct buses to Roma Termini (FCO: Leonardo Express train OR Cotral bus; CIA: Terravision OR SIT Bus). Always confirm the airport code when booking.
How early should I arrive at Rome Fiumicino?+
Schengen: 90 min. Non-Schengen: 2.5-3 hours. FCO security can hit 60+ min at peak (06:00-09:00 European departures + 16:00-20:00 long-haul). FCO Fast Track is sold per terminal — €10-€15. ITA Business + SkyTeam Elite Plus get priority lanes. Non-Schengen passport control on departure can also be slow.
Are taxis at Rome airport safe?+
Yes if you use the official white Roma Capitale taxi rank. The €50 flat rate is government-regulated and applies to any destination inside the Aurelian Wall (historic centre). Confirm "tariffa fissa cinquanta euro" before getting in. NEVER accept rides from drivers approaching you inside the terminal — they're unlicensed and overcharge. If a driver tries to add extras (luggage, surcharge), refuse and report the badge number.
Can I leave Rome Airport during a layover?+
Yes — Italy is in Schengen, so visa-free entry for most major nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore + 50+ others, soon ETIAS-gated). Leonardo Express to Termini in 32 min. Allow 4 hours minimum round trip. Quick options: Walk to the Vatican from Termini (45 min by foot or 15 min by Metro A), Trevi Fountain + Pantheon walking tour (90 min), or grab dinner near Termini in the Monti district.
