Should I fly into Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK)?+
BKK for full-service airlines (Thai, Singapore, Cathay, Emirates, BA, Lufthansa, etc.). DMK for low-cost (AirAsia, NokAir, Thai Lion, Scoot). The two airports are 35 km apart with no rail connection — allow 90 min by taxi between them. Don't book separate tickets connecting via the wrong airport.
How do I get from BKK to central Bangkok?+
Airport Rail Link — THB 45, 26 min direct to Phaya Thai BTS station. Best option. Runs every 10-15 min from 06:00-24:00. Taxi THB 350-450 including THB 50 airport surcharge + tollway. ALWAYS use the official taxi rank (Floor 1) — never the touts who approach you at arrivals. Grab THB 350-500. Free in-town check-in available at City Air Terminal (Makkasan, on the rail link).
Which concourse does my airline use at BKK?+
Concourses A-G are all in the same mega-terminal — connected airside, no inter-concourse shuttle needed. Thai Airways hubs at Concourse D. Star Alliance carriers cluster at C/D. Most international long-haul at E + F. The new SAT-1 satellite is separate — accessed by free APM train from Concourse C (3-min ride). Some Emirates + Thai long-haul use SAT-1.
Can I leave Bangkok Airport during a layover?+
Yes — Thailand offers visa-free entry for 60 days to most major passport holders (UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore). Take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai or Makkasan station (26 min), then BTS or MRT to anywhere in the city. Allow 4 hours minimum round trip. Quick layover ideas: Thai massage in the airport, or a meal at the food courts (level B).
How early should I arrive at BKK?+
International: 3 hours. Domestic: 2 hours. BKK security is generally efficient (15-30 min) but immigration outbound can be slow (30-60 min at peak — late evenings + early mornings). Walking distance from check-in to gate at Concourse G can be 25+ minutes. Thai Airways Royal Silk and Star Gold get fast-track immigration + security.
Is BKK Airport safe at night?+
Yes — the terminal is 24/7 and well-patrolled. The official taxi rank operates 24h. The Airport Rail Link runs until midnight; after that take a taxi or Grab. Sleep options: Louis Tavern Day Rooms (pay-per-hour cabins), Sleep Box Bangkok (capsule pods), Novotel Suvarnabhumi (on-airport hotel via walkway). Standard caution applies — Bangkok is generally safe but solo female travellers should pre-book Grab rather than queue for cabs at 3am.
