Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is the most tradition-strict Christmas market in Germany — 380+ years old, opened by the Christkind (a young woman selected biennially to play the role) in front of the Frauenkirche every year on the Friday before Advent. No music louder than a hurdy-gurdy is permitted in the market square.
Everything on the traditional Nuremberg market is Franconian: lebkuchen (spiced gingerbread — the city's namesake product for 400+ years), Nürnberger sausages (thumb-sized bratwurst, sold in 3s in a bread roll), and glühwein poured only into ceramic mugs (no plastic — Nuremberg fined itself into 100% ceramic in 2018).
The main market is on the Hauptmarkt square in front of Nuremberg's medieval town hall. The Sister Cities market (running parallel one street north) is where you find international stalls — Kraków pierogi, Glasgow shortbread, Antalya sweets. Skip the sister market only if you're time-limited; the main market is Germany's most authentic 8,000-square-metre outdoor Christmas experience.
Gebrannte Mandeln (glazed almonds) roasted in copper pans over open flame are the memory-food — sold by weight, €3 for 100g. Kinderweihnacht (the parallel children's market off to the side) has a carousel + train and is where Nürnberger families actually go.
