Rathausplatz Christmas Market
📍 Vienna City Hall square · 🕓 Daily 10:00 - 21:30
Biggest, most photogenic, most crowded. Ice-skating rink attached.
Austria · November 14 - December 26, 2026
Vienna runs six major Christmas markets and 15+ smaller ones. Rathausplatz (in front of the City Hall) is the crowd-magnet; Belvedere Palace and Schönbrunn are the two you actually want. Book your hotel by end of September — Vienna city centre goes up 40-60% for December weekends.
Vienna is the most tradition-anchored Christmas-market city in the German-speaking world. The Rathausplatz market opened first in 1975 — before that, the tradition was smaller. Today it draws 3M+ visitors in six weeks. Skip it on weekend evenings; go weekdays 15:00-17:00 (arrive right when it opens, before the tour buses land at 17:30).
The Belvedere Palace market is Vienna's design market — higher-end craft stalls, quieter crowd, and the palace façade lit up behind it is the postcard shot. Schönbrunn (the summer imperial palace) is the family choice — carousel + ice skating + brass band all in one courtyard.
Vienna's mulled wine is punsch (rum-based, sweeter than glühwein). Every stall serves it in a keepsake mug — you pay a €4-6 deposit which you get back when you return the mug, OR you keep it as the souvenir. First mug of the trip = keep. Every subsequent = return.

Local favourite — narrow cobbled streets, small craft stalls, no tour buses.

Skip the Rathausplatz mulled wine (queues + weak pour). Walk 12 minutes to Am Hof market — same mugs, half the crowd, better punsch.
