Common scams to watch out for
Yellow taxi meter fraud
Driver switches meter to "night rate 2" (2× multiplier) during daytime — technically legal button but ~4× normal fare.
How to avoid: Meter should display "GECE" only after 22:00. Insist on "GÜNDÜZ" (day rate) 06:00-22:00. If refused, get out.
Fake foreign currency conversion
Driver quotes fare in USD/EUR at inflated rate (e.g. "€60" for a TRY 500 ride).
How to avoid: Only pay in TRY. Withdraw TRY at airport ATM before taking taxi.
Fake Havaist shuttle
Touts at arrivals offering "Havaist shuttle" at TRY 500 into a private van (real Havaist is TRY 200 max to Sultanahmet).
How to avoid: Real Havaist has orange branding + designated bus stop outside arrivals. Ignore all van touts.
"Note swap" scam
You hand over TRY 500 note, driver drops it, shows a TRY 50 note and demands the difference.
How to avoid: State the note denomination out loud when handing over. Pay via credit card if driver has POS terminal.
