Airport arrivals: white + beige "petit taxi" rank outside terminal. Meter is legally required, universally ignored.
Common scams to watch out for
No-meter flat rate
Driver refuses meter + quotes MAD 200-300 flat for a MAD 80 ride.
How to avoid: Agree fare BEFORE getting in. Standard airport-to-Medina fare is MAD 100-150 (day), MAD 150-200 (night — 50% surcharge is legal after 20:00).
Fake "night surcharge"
Driver invents MAD 100+ "night rate" during daytime.
How to avoid: Night surcharge = 50% of meter fare, ONLY 20:00-06:00. Refuse anything higher.
Riad "cannot find" ransom
Driver drops you at wrong side of Medina, then demands extra MAD 200 to "find" your riad — most Medina addresses are car-inaccessible.
How to avoid: Ask riad in advance for its car-drop point + a porter to meet you. Never let driver pick their own drop location.
"Broken change" scam
Driver claims no change for MAD 200 note + keeps the whole amount.
How to avoid: Have MAD 100 + MAD 50 + coins ready. Refuse to hand over large notes.
Grand taxi shared-scam
Old Mercedes "grand taxi" quotes shared price then refuses to pick up others + charges you all four seats.
How to avoid: Grand taxis are for out-of-city trips only. For airport → Medina, use petit taxi (small red/beige car).
